  • The 10% reaches the foreign-owned share; entities wholly owned by Qatari and resident GCC nationals pay none, and petroleum operations pay at least 35%. Since 2025 large multinational groups are also subject to the 15% domestic minimum top-up tax (DMTT). No general capital-gains tax on individuals; gains realised by companies are generally taxed under the 10% corporate income tax.
  • Qatar does not currently levy VAT. The GCC VAT Framework Agreement presets a 5% standard rate and Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Oman have enacted under it; Qatar has not. This row needs re-checking if that changes rather than being assumed stable.

Headline statutory rates. The income-tax figure includes national surtaxes; any regional or municipal layer is shown beside it. Social contributions and reliefs are excluded. Verify the current rate with the authority before relying on it.

At a glance

A small, gas-funded economy with untaxed personal income and, since the labour reforms, the Gulf's most portable employment status — you no longer need your employer's consent to change jobs.

Best for

Salaried professionals in energy, construction, aviation, finance and education recruited from abroad.

Who this may not suit

People seeking permanent settlement or citizenship, or who need a large non-corporate job market — residence follows employment and naturalisation is exceptional.

Main routes in

Key trade-offs

  • Untaxed income at source does not mean untaxed at home — check your own country's rules before assuming a net gain.
  • Housing and schooling in Doha are expensive, and packages that once covered both increasingly do not.
  • Residence remains tied to holding a job, so an exit from employment starts a clock.

First steps

  1. 1 Have degrees and police clearance attested before signing — attestation is the usual delay.
  2. 2 Confirm in writing who pays for housing, schooling, flights and dependants' residence.
  3. 3 Complete the medical examination and biometrics to obtain the residence ID.
  4. 4 Register on the government services app — most later formalities run through it.

What changes often

  • · Work-permit and sponsorship transfer rules
  • · Qatarisation targets by sector
  • · Free-zone licensing and foreign-ownership rules

Job-change, exit and long-term-residence rules have changed substantially with the labour reforms — confirm current procedure with the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Labour. Ministry of Interior ↗
