Cost of living, housing, transport and neighborhoods in Doha.
Safety is a general editorial assessment, not an official rating — check the official travel advisories for Qatar before travelling.
City Overview
Doha is Qatar’s capital — natural-gas wealth, Al Jazeera and host of the 2022 World Cup, a center of government, energy, finance and education (Education City hosts branches of top US universities). Zero income tax, highly international (a foreign majority) and very safe, with a futuristic skyline and culture district (the Museum of Islamic Art). Housing costs are among the Gulf’s highest. The political, energy and international center of Qatar.

Getting Around Doha
Doha Metro (3 fully-automatic lines, among the world’s fastest) + buses; Karwa, cheap taxis/ride-hailing. Hamad Airport (DOH, a world-best airport). Metro covers the core.
Main transport
- Doha Metro ↗ Three driverless lines built for the 2022 World Cup, linking the airport, West Bay, Msheireb and Education City.
- Metrolink feeder buses Free electric shuttles from metro stations into surrounding neighbourhoods — they close much of the last-mile gap.
- Driving and taxis Still how most residents get around outside the metro corridors; fuel is inexpensive and taxis and ride-hailing are widely used.
Typical costs
Airport access
- Hamad International (DOH) ↗ On the metro Red line, so the airport is a short and cheap ride from the centre rather than a taxi fare.
Good to know for newcomers
- A travel card pays for itself quickly and the metro is cheap enough that most trips cost less than parking would.
- The metro covers the main corridors only, so check whether your neighbourhood has a Metrolink feeder before assuming car-free living.
- Summer heat is extreme from June to September — stations and shuttles are air-conditioned, but plan minimal time outdoors.
Commuting & where to live
- West Bay concentrates offices, while Msheireb is the central interchange — living near either line keeps commutes under 30 minutes.
- Compounds further out are cheaper and popular with families, but usually assume a car.

Healthcare & insurance
Qatar requires health insurance for residents and visitors, arranged through employers for most workers. Hamad Medical Corporation runs the public hospital network alongside private providers; a Health Card gives residents access to public facilities.
