Tax snapshot
- Gains on Colombian-listed shares are non-taxable when the beneficial owner sells no more than 3% of the company’s outstanding shares in a year (art. 36-1 ET); above that, the 15% occasional-gains tax applies. The 15% applies where the asset was held for two years or more. A shorter holding is taxed as ordinary capital income instead, up to 39%.

Headline statutory rates. The income-tax figure includes national surtaxes; any regional or municipal layer is shown beside it. Social contributions and reliefs are excluded. Verify the current rate with the authority before relying on it.
At a glance
An explicit digital-nomad visa, low costs and two large cities with established international communities — with conditions that differ sharply between neighbourhoods rather than between regions.
Best for
Remote earners paid from abroad, founders serving the Andean market, and people with Colombian family ties.
Who this may not suit
People who need consistent safety and services nationwide — conditions differ sharply between cities and regions, and income thresholds move with the minimum wage each year.

Key trade-offs
- The nomad visa covers foreign income only — taking on Colombian clients or an employer needs a different category.
- Personal-security conditions vary block by block, far more than city-level statistics suggest.
- Staying beyond a threshold makes you tax-resident on worldwide income — a separate test from your visa.
First steps
- 1 Apply online through the foreign-ministry portal rather than an agent quoting an old category.
- 2 Apostille your supporting documents and have income evidence ready in a consistent currency.
- 3 Register the visa and obtain a foreigner's ID card after arrival.
- 4 Visit neighbourhoods before signing a lease — this matters more here than the city choice.
What changes often
- · M and V visa categories and their financial tests
- · Minimum-wage-linked income thresholds
- · Cédula de extranjería registration duties
Visa categories and income requirements are set by decree and revised periodically — confirm current rules with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before applying. Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancilleria) ↗
