How to file
1. Start on the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal and answer its four guided questions: your nationality, your country of residence, how long you intend to stay and the purpose of the visit
2. The portal then tells you whether a visa is required for Italy and gives you the information and forms that apply to your case
3. A short-stay visa covers transit or a stay of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period counted from first entry
4. Note which type the portal returns: a uniform Schengen visa (VSU, type C) valid for the states that fully apply the Schengen acquis; a limited territorial validity visa (VTL, type C) valid only for the issuing state or a few named states; or an airport transit visa (VTA, type A)
5. Apply to the Italian embassy or consulate with jurisdiction over your place of residence, or to the outsourcing partner it uses
6. Understand that submitting the required documents does not by itself mean the visa will be issued, and that border authorities can check the entry conditions again when you arrive
