Getting Around Mexico City

12 metro lines cover major areas at extremely low fares (MX$5). Uber is safe and reliable in most areas, preferred over taxis. High altitude (2,240m) can cause initial adjustment issues.

Main transport

  • Metro (STC) Twelve lines and one of the busiest networks in the Americas — heavily subsidised, so it is by far the cheapest way to cross the city.
  • Metrobús Bus rapid transit in dedicated lanes; line 4 is the one that serves the airport terminals.
  • Ecobici and walking The public bike scheme covers the central boroughs well, and neighbourhoods like Roma and Condesa are genuinely walkable.

Typical costs

Metro MX$5 flat — held at this price for 2026
Metrobús MX$6; line 4 to the airport is priced separately
Payment Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada works across metro, Metrobús and Ecobici

Airport access

Good to know for newcomers

  • Buy a Movilidad Integrada card on arrival — single paper tickets have largely been phased out on the metro.
  • Peak-hour metro crowding is intense; several lines run women-and-children-only cars at the front during those hours.
  • The city sits at 2,240 m — expect to need a couple of weeks before walking uphill feels normal.

Commuting & where to live

  • Traffic is severe, so metro or Metrobús access matters more than distance when choosing a neighbourhood.
  • Central boroughs (Cuauhtémoc, Benito Juárez, Miguel Hidalgo) cost more but keep most commutes under 30 minutes.
