How to file
- Check your passport is valid for the whole stay
- Arrange health examinations if we ask for them
- Gather identity documents, evidence that you are a genuine visitor, and character documents
- Prepare extra documents if you are asking for a longer stay
- Apply online in ImmiAccount and pay the visa application charge
- Give accurate information — tell us if someone helped with your application
- Wait for the decision; a grant allows a stay of up to 3 or 12 months as specified on the visa
- Australia Tax Return — Annual income tax return in Australia Checked against the official page on 2026-08-09
How to file
- Lodge online with myTax — create a myGov account linked to the ATO and use myTax on a computer, smartphone or tablet; nothing to download
- Wait for pre-fill: the ATO pre-fills most information from employers, banks, government agencies, health funds and other third parties by late July
- Records kept in the myDeductions tool can be uploaded to pre-fill the return as well
- Or use a registered tax agent — they are the only people who can charge a fee to prepare and lodge your return
- Or lodge a paper return by mail; most paper refunds issue within 50 business days, against about 2 weeks for myTax
- The due date to lodge is 31 October
- Leaving Australia permanently? Check whether you can lodge early, on paper
- Outside Australia when the return is due? There are separate instructions for lodging from overseas
- Behind on earlier years? Lodge a prior-year tax return
- If you do not need to lodge at all, lodge a non-lodgment advice instead
- Australia Tax File Number (TFN) Application — Individual tax identification number required for working or studying in Australia
How to file
- Apply online through ATO website — free of charge
- Must hold a valid visa (student, work, PR all eligible)
- Provide passport and visa details plus Australian address
- TFN delivered by mail within 28 days
- You can work without a TFN but employer will withhold tax at highest rate (47%)
- TFN also needed for Superannuation account and bank account setup
