Xining is Qinghai’s capital and the gateway to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at ~2,300 m, a famed "summer capital" with cool summers. Multi-ethnic (Tibetan, Hui, Han and more), with Kumbum Monastery and Qinghai Lake as top draws. A transport hub toward Tibet and along the Qinghai Silk Road, it has low cost of living and housing.
