Getting Around Shenzhen

16 metro lines and growing; high-speed rail and border crossings link to Hong Kong. Highest EV penetration rate globally. Bike sharing and e-bikes are widely used.

Main transport

  • Shenzhen Metro A young, fast-expanding network that already covers the whole city and connects to Hong Kong at Futian and Luohu.
  • Buses One of the world's first fully electrified bus fleets; cheap, quiet and dense in areas the metro has not reached yet.
  • Cross-border links Futian and Luohu checkpoints connect straight into the Hong Kong MTR, and Guangzhou is under an hour by high-speed rail.

Typical costs

Metro From ¥2 for the first 4 km, rising by distance
Longest trips Capped around ¥14 in standard carriages
Payment Shenzhen Tong card, QR code in Alipay/WeChat, or a transit app

Airport access

Good to know for newcomers

  • Almost everything is paid by phone — set up a mobile payment account early, as cash is rarely convenient.
  • If you plan to cross into Hong Kong regularly, check which checkpoint your line reaches and its opening hours before choosing where to live.
  • The metro is new enough that station areas are still developing — a line extension can change a neighbourhood's rents quickly.

Commuting & where to live

  • Futian and Nanshan hold most white-collar jobs; Nanshan in particular concentrates the tech sector and has the highest rents.
  • Longgang and Bao'an are markedly cheaper but add 40–60 minutes each way on the metro.
