City Overview
San Francisco is the tech-and-finance hub of the US West Coast, next to Silicon Valley and a global center of startups and venture capital. It is famed for steep hills, cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge and a diverse culture. Living and housing costs rank among the highest in the country; employment centers on tech, biotech and finance. Mild Mediterranean climate with foggy summers — the Bay Area gateway where high pay meets high cost.

Getting Around San Francisco
Muni metro/bus + BART regional rail; Clipper card works on both. Ferries and cable cars are signatures. San Francisco International (SFO). Walkable and bike-friendly but hilly.
Main transport
- Muni (metro, bus, cable car) ↗ The city's own network — light rail under Market Street, dense bus and trolleybus routes, plus the historic cable cars.
- BART ↗ Regional heavy rail linking the city to Oakland, Berkeley and the wider East Bay, and to SFO. Fares are distance-based and Clipper-only.
- Caltrain ↗ The Peninsula commuter line to Palo Alto and San José, now electrified with faster and more frequent service — the standard Silicon Valley commute.
Typical costs
Airport access
- San Francisco International (SFO) ↗ BART runs directly into the international terminal; expect an airport premium of about $5 on top of the normal fare.
- Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) ↗ Across the bay and often cheaper; reached by BART plus the automated connector from Coliseum station.
Good to know for newcomers
- One Clipper card (or a contactless bank card) works across Muni, BART, Caltrain and the ferries — you do not need separate tickets per operator.
- BART no longer accepts paper tickets, so set up Clipper (physical or in your phone wallet) before your first trip.
- The city is compact and walkable but genuinely hilly — check the gradient of a route before assuming a 20-minute walk is easy.
Commuting & where to live
- Many tech jobs sit down the Peninsula rather than in the city, so Caltrain access often matters more than being close to Downtown.
- East Bay neighbourhoods on BART (Oakland, Berkeley) trade a 20–30 minute ride for materially lower rents.

Healthcare & insurance
There is no universal public cover: most people are insured through an employer, or buy a plan on the ACA marketplace, and being uninsured exposes you to very high bills. The San Francisco Health Network runs the city's public clinics and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
