City Overview
Naha City, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, sits in the south of Okinawa’s main island as the center of Ryukyu culture and a subtropical island city. Once the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom (Shuri Castle), it blends Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asian influences, with a distinctive Ryukyuan language, music and cuisine (Okinawan food, awamori). Warm, famed for beaches and coral reefs, with tourism as its pillar. It is a gateway linking mainland Japan to East and Southeast Asia. Island import costs run a bit high, but the climate is pleasant and the culture unique — a resort-and-culture city at Japan’s southern tip.
