Getting Around Los Angeles

A car is essentially necessary in LA; public transit only covers major corridors. Metro Rail connects key destinations but service is infrequent. Uber/Lyft are common but add up.

Main transport

• Metro rail (B/D subway, A/E/C/K light rail) ↗ Six rail lines centred on Downtown; the A line runs Long Beach–Azusa and the K line now reaches LAX via the automated people mover.
• Metro buses The backbone of the network — far more of the city is reachable by bus than by rail, including the Metro G and J bus rapid transit lines.
• Driving Still the default for most residents: distances are long and many neighbourhoods have thin transit. Budget for parking and insurance when comparing costs.

Airport access

• Los Angeles International (LAX) ↗ The automated people mover links LAX to the Metro K line and regional rail, so the airport is finally reachable without a car.
• Hollywood Burbank (BUR) ↗ Small and much faster to clear than LAX; convenient for the San Fernando Valley and served by Metrolink commuter rail.

Good to know for newcomers

• Fare capping means you never need to buy a pass — just tap the same TAP card or bank card every ride and the system stops charging once you hit the cap.
• Check transit access before signing a lease — the difference between a rail-adjacent neighbourhood and a car-dependent one is the single biggest lifestyle variable here.
• Metrolink regional trains reach Orange County, Ventura and the Inland Empire — useful if you work in LA but want cheaper housing further out.

Commuting & where to live

• Rush hour runs roughly 7–10am and 3–7pm and freeway travel times can double; many employers offer staggered hours because of it.
• Living near the A, B, D or E lines (Downtown, Koreatown, Pasadena, Long Beach, Santa Monica) is the practical way to commute without a car.

Healthcare & insurance

There is no universal public cover: most people are insured through an employer, or buy a plan on the ACA marketplace, and being uninsured exposes you to very high bills. The LA County Department of Health Services runs the public safety-net hospitals and clinics.
