Cost of living, housing, transport and neighborhoods in Chicago.

City Overview
Chicago is the finance, trade and transport hub of the US Midwest — the country’s third-largest metro and a center of futures and derivatives trading (CME). Its lakefront skyline, architecture and museums are famous. Costs are below the coastal megacities and housing is relatively affordable. Employment is diverse (finance, manufacturing, logistics, tech). Four distinct seasons with bitter, windy winters (the "Windy City") — the gateway of the Midwest.

Getting Around Chicago
CTA "L" elevated trains + buses; Ventra card works across them, with Metra commuter rail to the suburbs. O’Hare (ORD) / Midway (MDW). Walkable and bike-friendly.
Main transport
- CTA 'L' trains ↗ Eight colour-coded lines around the downtown Loop; the Red and Blue lines run 24 hours, which few US systems do.
- CTA buses A dense grid following the street plan — usually the fastest option for crosstown trips the rail network does not serve.
- Metra commuter rail ↗ Eleven lines radiating to the suburbs; a separate fare system from the CTA, priced by distance zone.
Typical costs
Airport access
- O'Hare International (ORD) ↗ The Blue line runs from downtown to the terminals around the clock — slower than a taxi but immune to expressway traffic.
- Midway International (MDW) ↗ Closer to downtown and mostly domestic; the Orange line connects it to the Loop.
Good to know for newcomers
- Get a Ventra card rather than paying contactless per ride — the card fare is lower than the pay-as-you-go rate for bank cards.
- CTA fares rose on 1 February 2026 — the first increase since 2018, so older guides quote the wrong prices.
- Winter is the real transport variable: elevated platforms are exposed, so factor wind chill into how far you are willing to walk to a station.
Commuting & where to live
- The rail network is radial into the Loop, so downtown commutes are easy while neighbourhood-to-neighbourhood trips often mean a bus.
- Neighbourhoods along the Red, Brown and Blue lines (Lakeview, Logan Square, Andersonville) are the usual car-free choices.

Healthcare & insurance
There is no universal public cover: most people are insured through an employer, or buy a plan on the ACA marketplace, and being uninsured exposes you to very high bills. Cook County Health runs the public hospital and clinic network serving the city.
