Getting Around Beijing

22 subway lines cover the main urban area; dense bus network; DiDi ride-hailing is convenient. Air quality can be a concern — an air purifier is recommended.

Main transport

  • Beijing Subway One of the world's largest networks, with more than 20 lines covering the whole urban area and both airports.
  • Buses Very cheap and extensive, but slower in traffic; the same transit card works on buses and the subway.
  • Bikes and scooters Shared bikes are everywhere and the city is flat with wide protected lanes — the standard way to cover the last kilometre.

Typical costs

Subway Distance-based: ¥3 up to 6 km, ¥4 to 12 km, ¥5 to 22 km, ¥6 to 32 km
Longer trips +¥1 per additional 20 km, no fare cap
Airport express Separate fare — not part of the distance system

Airport access

Good to know for newcomers

  • Since September 2024 the subway gates accept overseas Visa and Mastercard contactless, so you can ride before setting up a local payment app.
  • Security screening at every station adds a few minutes — factor it in when a connection looks tight.
  • The subway closes around 11pm on most lines, earlier than many capitals; late nights mean a taxi or ride-hailing app.

Commuting & where to live

  • The city is organised in ring roads: rents fall sharply outside the 4th and 5th rings, but commutes lengthen just as sharply.
  • Peak crowding on lines 1, 4, 5, 10 and 13 is severe; living one stop off the busiest interchange often buys a far better commute.
