Getting Around Auckland
Bus, light rail, and ferries form the public transport network, but coverage is less dense than Sydney. AT HOP card works everywhere. Having a car is more convenient. Auckland to Wellington is about 1 hour by air.
Main transport
- Buses ↗ The backbone of the network, with frequent routes on the main corridors and dedicated busways to the north and northwest.
- Trains Four lines radiating from the centre; the City Rail Link tunnel has reshaped capacity and journey times through the CBD.

- Fares rose about 5% on 1 February 2026, so older figures understate the current cost.
- An AT HOP card gives the lower fare and a weekly cap; contactless bank cards work too but cap daily instead.
- The region is spread out and hilly, and many suburbs remain car-dependent — check the frequency of your nearest route, not just its existence.
Commuting & where to live
- Rail and busway suburbs (Newmarket, New Lynn, Albany, Panmure) give the most reliable car-free commutes.
- Crossing the harbour bridge at peak is the city's main bottleneck; the ferry often beats driving from the North Shore.
