Abu Dhabi
Cost of living, housing, transport and neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi.
Safety is a general editorial assessment, not an official rating — check the official travel advisories for United Arab Emirates before travelling.
City Overview
Abu Dhabi is the UAE capital and largest emirate — backed by oil wealth and the world’s largest sovereign fund (ADIA), a center of government, energy, finance and culture (Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque). Highly international, zero income tax and very safe; housing costs are among the Gulf’s highest but incomes are high. The political, energy and wealth center of the UAE.

Getting Around Abu Dhabi
Buses + heavy driving (cheap taxis/ride-hailing); no metro. Abu Dhabi Airport (AUH). Spaciously planned with a walkable Corniche.
Main transport
- Public buses ↗ Air-conditioned city and intercity routes run by the Integrated Transport Centre, paid for with the Hafilat smart card.
- Taxis and ride-hailing Metered taxis are plentiful and cheap by Gulf standards; ride-hailing apps operate alongside them.
- Driving The default for most residents — the city is spread out, fuel is cheap and there is no metro, though paid parking applies in built-up areas.
Typical costs
Airport access
- Zayed International (AUH) ↗ Renamed from Abu Dhabi International in 2024; served by public bus and taxi, roughly 30–40 minutes from the city centre.
Good to know for newcomers
- Get a Hafilat card before your first bus trip — cash fares are higher and not accepted on every route.
- Summer heat makes walking impractical from roughly June to September; plan around air-conditioned transport.
- Abu Dhabi and Dubai are about 90 minutes apart by road, and intercity buses run frequently — commuting between them is common but long.
Commuting & where to live
- Most residents drive, so parking availability and building parking allocation are worth checking before signing a lease.
- Living on Abu Dhabi island keeps commutes short; mainland districts like Khalifa City are cheaper but add a bridge crossing.

Healthcare & insurance
Health insurance is mandatory for residents and employers must provide it, so cover is normally arranged with the residence visa rather than separately. Care is delivered largely through private hospitals and clinics regulated by the emirate's health authority.
