Turku
City Overview
Turku is Finland’s oldest city and former capital — a historic port at the mouth of the Aura, with a medieval castle and cathedral as landmarks. Shipbuilding (cruise ships), maritime, biotech and two universities give it energy, and it is the gateway to the Archipelago Sea (one of the world’s largest archipelagos). European Capital of Culture in 2011. Living and housing costs are below Helsinki with high livability, and it is very safe — the historic, maritime and academic center of southwest Finland.
