Nantong sits on the north bank of the Yangtze’s mouth, facing Shanghai across the river and brought closer by the Hu-Su-Tong Bridge — nicknamed "North Shanghai." A cradle of China’s early national industry (Zhang Jian), it is strong in textiles, home textiles (Diecheng Bridge), construction and shipbuilding/marine engineering.
